πŸ•΅οΈ Learn the Tricks

Every ad you've ever seen uses at least one of these four tricks. Once you know them, you can't unsee them. Take a look at this one β€” see how many you can already spot.

A parody infomercial-style advertisement for a fictional gadget called 'The OMG! Ultimate Everything Solution', packed with exaggerated claims, urgency and guarantees The OMG! Ultimate Everything Solutionβ„’ A made-up product β€” but every trick in it is 100% real advertising language.
🚌

Bandwagon

Makes you think "everyone else is doing it, so I should too." It plays on the fear of being left out β€” not on facts.
Example: "Join millions of happy customers!" Β· "Everyone's switching β€” don't be the last one!"

πŸš€

Exaggeration

Makes something sound far bigger, better or more amazing than it really is.
Example: "The best burger in the ENTIRE universe!" Β· "This pen will change your handwriting forever!"

⏰

Fake urgency

Creates pressure to buy or act right now β€” even when there's no real reason to rush.
Example: "Only 3 left in stock!" Β· "Sale ends in 10 minutes!" (that somehow starts again tomorrow)

πŸ«₯

Weasel words

Vague words that sound like a promise but don't actually promise anything specific β€” often hiding that there's no real evidence.
Example: "Helps reduce signs of tiredness" (helps how much?) Β· "Up to 50% more power" (so maybe 2%?)

🎡 One more thing: Alliteration & Rhyme

This isn't a fifth trick β€” it doesn't try to fool you into believing something false. It's a sound trick: repeating sounds or rhythms just makes a slogan easier to remember.
Alliteration (same starting sound): "Don't dream it, drive it." (Jaguar)
Rhyme (matching end sounds): "Once you pop, you can't stop." (Pringles)
Catchy β‰  true. A jingle can be 100% honest β€” or completely empty. Sound just makes it stick in your head.

🎯 Spot the Trick

Which trick is each line using?

1. "Everyone's already switched to SuperClean β€” don't be the last one left behind!"

2. "This shampoo will give you the most incredible hair of your entire life."

3. "Offer ends tonight at midnight β€” act now before it's too late!"

4. "Our formula helps support healthy-looking skin."

✍️ Write Your Ad

Write a short, over-the-top ad (60–100 words) for your company. Use at least two of the four tricks β€” on purpose.

πŸ” The Honest Label

This is the whole point of The Honest Magazine: every ad gets an honest label. Here's what that looks like for the OMG! ad from Section 1 β€” notice how "boring" and specific it gets.

An 'honest label' for the OMG! product, styled like a nutrition facts panel, listing what the product really is, the claimed benefits marked 'results not guaranteed', the fine print, and a 'nutritional value' box rating it 0% magic, 0% hype, 0% guarantees, 100% common sense The Honest Label, for the same product No slogans, no exclamation marks β€” just the facts.

Now do the same for your own ad. Which tricks did you use, and what's the plain, boring truth hiding behind them?
