📞 The Phone Call
Mission 2 · Unit 2 — An unknown number calls. It's them. Can you hold your own in formal English, on the spot?
Unknown number calling …
Formal phone calls catch almost everyone off guard the first time. That's normal — it gets easier with practice.
🎧 Listen In
A few days after you sent your application, an employer calls to arrange your interview. Here's what they say to you:
- "I received an email from you about the position."
- "You asked me to contact you. Are you available on that day?"
- "It will take approximately 30 minutes."
- "… to see if you're suitable for the job."
- "Please ensure that you are punctual."
- "Please inform us if you aren't able to attend."
- "If you require more information, just let me know."
Read them carefully — then answer the questions below.
True or False: The interview will take about 30 minutes.
True or False: Being on time doesn't matter.
True or False: You should tell them if you can't come.
True or False: The interview checks if you're right for the job.
💬 Your Turn
Complete the phone call. Write your side of the conversation — one or two natural sentences per turn. Keep it polite and fairly formal; it's still a stranger calling about a job.
Hello, could I speak to you please? This is Ms. Clark from Creative Studio Munich.
Good. I received an email from you about the position.
You asked me to contact you. Are you available on Tuesday afternoon?
Great. It will take approximately 30 minutes — mainly some questions to see if you're suitable for the job.
Please ensure that you are punctual, and please inform us if you aren't able to attend.
If you require more information, just let me know. Otherwise, we'll see you on Tuesday.
Practice Out Loud
Before you move on: read your completed dialogue out loud with a partner — one of you plays the caller, one plays you. It sounds very different once you say it, not just write it.
