From back office to tech power: Since the 1990s, cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune have grown into major IT centres. Global companies outsource software development, customer support and data work to Indian firms such as Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Wipro — because India produces huge numbers of English-speaking engineering and computer science graduates every year. Bangalore is now nicknamed the "Silicon Valley of India."
Digital India, at scale: The government's "Digital India" programme (started 2015) pushed to get more citizens online and to digitise public services. Two results stand out worldwide: Aadhaar, a biometric ID system covering over a billion people, and the UPI (Unified Payments Interface), a mobile payment system that now processes more real-time transactions per month than most of the rest of the world combined.
The next chapter — and its risks: India is now investing heavily in AI and has a fast-growing start-up scene, with some Indian-founded companies reaching global scale. But there are real tensions: AI could automate many of the outsourcing and call-centre jobs that built the IT boom in the first place. The "gig economy" (app-based delivery and ride-hailing work, e.g. for Ola, Swiggy, Zomato) is growing fast, but workers often have few guaranteed rights. And there's a sharp digital divide — reliable high-speed internet is common in big cities, but far less so in rural India.
The hardware behind the boom
Behind every app and outsourced service is real hardware — India's tech boom runs on physical chips and circuit boards, not just "the cloud."
UPI in everyday life
UPI stands for Unified Payments Interface — a system that links your bank account straight to your phone. From street food stalls to shopping malls, scanning a QR code to pay instantly by phone is now completely normal across urban India.
