๐ฑ Mission D ยท Australia 2035
Tourism, mining and farming built the economy. Can it stay that way?
๐ Background briefing
The Great Barrier Reef: The world's largest coral reef system stretches over 2,300 km along Australia's coast. Rising ocean temperatures have caused repeated mass coral bleaching events since 2016. The reef also supports a tourism industry worth billions of dollars a year โ its health and the economy around it are directly connected.
Energy transition: Australia has some of the best solar and wind resources in the world, and renewable energy has grown rapidly in the last decade. At the same time, Australia remains one of the world's largest exporters of coal โ an economic strength that is also a major source of the emissions driving climate change.
Tourism and economy: Tourism is a major employer, much of it built on nature: the reef, the Outback, the coastline. That creates a direct tension โ the same climate change threatening these attractions is partly driven by the industries (like coal and gas exports) that fund the economy.
This is the core dilemma your team has to address: Australia's economy and image both depend on nature staying intact, but not all of Australia's economy is compatible with keeping it that way.
The Great Barrier Reef
The world's largest coral reef system โ and one of Australia's biggest tourism draws.
Where it is
Over 2,300 km along the Queensland coast โ roughly the distance from Berlin to Athens.
Why are the Great Barrier Reef's health and Australia's tourism economy "directly connected"?
What is the "core dilemma" described above, in your own words?
๐ค Build your product: pitch
Your team pitches Australia's 2035 future vision to the international youth forum. Your pitch must include three things:
- A trade-off. A trade-off means Australia can't keep everything exactly as it is โ something has to change or be given up to protect the future. Example: "Australia could export less coal. That would mean fewer mining jobs, but a safer climate."
- One real idea. A simple, concrete plan for how Australia can keep tourism and the economy strong while also protecting nature and climate. Example: "Use solar power to run hotels and boats near the reef, instead of fuel that adds to climate change."
- A slogan. One short, catchy sentence that sums up your vision โ the kind of line you'd put on a poster. Example: "A greener Australia is a stronger Australia."
Submit your mission
Enter your name and class, then submit. Bring your pitch to Phase 4 for the class showcase.
Nicely done
Your pitch is saved. Head to the Critical Thinking Lab once all teams have finished Phase 2.
